THE BFG at CFT

Freshly transferred from Stratford-upon-Avon, Tom Wells’ wondercrump adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic enjoyed a full house on press night at Chichester Festival Theatre, where the seating is democratically raked to allow for excellent views throughout.

The puppetry is nothing short of exceptional. Even those familiar with the best of what the UK has to offer in terms of puppet-based children’s theatre (at The Little Angel Theatre for example) will be wowed by the sheer scale of the Troublethumpers, with the Bloodbottler requiring four puppeteers to keep him aloft. The playfulness of the miniature version of Sophie too, allows for economies of fear within the production.

And there are some terrifying moments. In front of us, a boy no older than two in his BFG pyjamas sucked his thumb and cuddled close to his dad as the front row got spattered with not-so-friendly giant spittle.

As the innocent “norphan” Sophie, Martha Bailey Vine gives plenty of pluck, and as her loyal friend Kimberly - an addition to Dahl’s original cast of characters - Uma Patel brings a moving sense of solidarity and kinship to the story.

For the ultimate Mayfair date night, there’s only one itinerary worth considering.

Start proceedings at the Curzon cinema with an early screening of The Met Opera or Royal Ballet, then make your way east to the best Chinese restaurant in London (easily), where well-loved favourites are elevated to unimaginably decadent heights.

The ground floor of @mimimeifair has the feel of a first-class dining carriage on a steam train. With art deco tiling, old-fashioned gas lamps and sultry,
burgundy booths, it’s as though you’ve legitimately arrived on the set of von Sternberg’s Shanghai Express.

Beautifully presented on cabbage leaf plates not
dissimilar to the Portuguese Bordallo Pinheiro style, you’ll yourselves clashing chopsticks over the third
caviar-topped Norway lobster, whose kingly appearance and heavenly texture might convince you to skip your staple duck pancakes.

Don’t, though.

Upstairs, the vibe is more in keeping with this century. Stuccoed walls frame hand-painted botanicals, with brightly coloured banquette seating and comfy scalloped leather chairs for those in need of something sturdier.

Service is exceptionally attentive, with waiting staff happy to provide counsel on levels of spice, crunch
and tannins. Their sound advice was to start proceedings with a smoky Illegal Szechuan cocktail and a round of crispy langoustines…

@wayoutwestfestival returns to Slottsskogen Park in Gothenburg from 13–15 August 2026, continuing its run as one of Europe’s most forward-thinking festivals, known for its progressive programming, cultural breadth and commitment to conscious living.

Leading the latest lineup announcement, UK pop icon @lilyallen has been revealed as a new addition for 2026, bringing her defining new album West End Girl to the stage in a special full-album performance. Widely praised for its honesty and focus, the record marks one of the most compelling chapters of her career, with its emotional depth and theatrical melodies reaffirming Allen as a fearless voice in modern British songwriting.
