Brighton's Best Mexican Street Food

If you've ever wandered through Brighton's North Lanes, you'll have noticed the bright, inviting signage at La Choza and vowed to try the place one day. And when that day comes, you'll be smiling from oreja to oreja. As the Mexican proverb goes: We all smile in the same language.*

Drenched in colour, you'd be right to assume the boldness of the exterior extends to flavours on the menu (although thankfully even the XXX hot naga salsa didn't require a side order of milk).
We started with mocktails on the kerbside: a passion fruit margarita with 0% tequila (and cinnamon rim) & homemade citrus fizz. Both were nicely balanced, not too sweet. Aperitivos perfectos.
As much as we enjoyed the seagull-centred drama outside, we decided to eat indoors, in the eponymous “shack,”bedecked with souvenirs from La Choza’s owners’ travels in Central America.
Stuffed with beef, black beans and jalapeño, La Choza’s special board burrito had great heat and texture, without the burn. Meanwhile, the burrito bowl with black turtle beans and roasted veg was spiced to perfection with fresh chilli.
In our little red cantina basket, ramekins of taco shop salsa and guacamole provided great dipping potential and we loved the bed of shredded red cabbage for its eat-a-rainbow vibes. And in a supporting role, was the prickly pear cactus salad, which had the appearance of runner beans and the softness of aloe vera. Well worth a try.
Para pudín? A portion of churros to share, dipped in chocolate sauce, washed down with rich and spicy Mexican hot chocolate. El veredicto: ¡deliciosa!

* Todos sonreímos en el mismo idioma.
