London in December is a contact sport. You dodge crowds, debate whether your dad really needs another scarf, and pay eight pounds for a hot chocolate because it felt festive. Eventually you need a proper pit stop. Something good enough to restore your will to continue spending money you swore you wouldnāt spend this year.
Here are the spots worth detouring for across the city.

If youāre stalking Shoreditch for presents
Kolamba East, Shoreditch
The warm Sri Lankan welcome at Kolamba East hits the spot after an hour spent weaving through Spitalfields crowds. The signature Hot Butter Soft Shell Crab lands like a hug, the seasonal Kalu Pol Pumpkin is perfect winter comfort, and the Payasam brings cinnamon, raisins and instant calm.
If Covent Garden has drained the last of your sparkle
ADOH, Covent Garden
Maiden Lane is chaos this time of year, so ADOH is the quick, hearty escape you need. Start with chilli prawn toast or mutton rolls, then move to the signature Kothu, a chopped roti dish tossed with vegetables, eggs and curry sauce. Pick from crab, mutton, chicken or jackfruit and watch your mood lift.
If Chelsea is calling your name
Wildflowers, Chelsea
Hidden inside Newsonās Yard off Pimlico Road, Wildflowers is where you go for a slower, calmer lunch in the middle of a shopping marathon. Mediterranean plates, relaxed service and a room that feels like itās actively lowering your blood pressure.
Bar Flor, Chelsea
Upstairs, Bar Flor switches the mood to something looser and more mischievous. Think pintxos, tapas, vermouths, Basque ciders and a wine list that keeps shifting. Highlights include Cantabrian anchovies on baguette, seafood gildas, calamari sandwiches and holiday potatoes bravas.
If youāre wandering Notting Hill with five shopping bags and no plan
SINO, Notting Hill
SINO reimagines Ukrainian dishes with British and Ukrainian ingredients and nails that balance between comfort and surprise. The Chicken Kyiv with bison grass mash, wild garlic butter and truffle feels like a present you bought for yourself. The cherry glazed BBQ catfish with sausage and paprika sauce is vibrant, smoky and unforgettable.
If Oxford Street has broken you
Motorino, Fitzrovia
Just off Oxford Street, Motorino understands the pain of shopping in that part of town better than anyone. Itās a modern London Italian with real personality. Order the agnolotti carbonara, the Bluefin tuna carpaccio or the Old Spot pork chop with mustard fruits and pear, then reset with one of Kevin Armstrongās cocktails. The Chargers are dangerously drinkable and the Dill Boy Martini is pure December joy.
If Christmas shopping is a marathon, these places turn it into something almost enjoyable. Almost.
